Regrets
by Ella Jane Michael
what do you do
with your regrets?
do you fold them up?
make loose change
out of them?
every thought
bullies its way
into the funeral flowers
that you hung up to dry.
you know nothing.
the past is the past.
you know everything.
every thought
after the day
you buried your mother
is an unforgiving, weighted cry.
what do you do
with all this unwanted knowledge?
surely the clothes return to the same drawer?
surely the coins in your pocket
are still copper?
